The 1st of the Prezzo restaurants was opened in central London in 2000 and now in 2012 they have an impressive circa 160 Italian restaurants opened throughout the UK. The restaurants which are all individually designed have been built on a number of listed buildings of particular local interest.

The Platform Lift Company Ltd are prezzos preferred suppliers of disabled platform lifts and have recently designed, manufactured & installed a Short rise Platform lift into its new Southport restaurant, the popular Victorian seaside town in Merseyside, set out over two floors of an impressive period building and former bank, Prezzo, Southport retains many of its original features with its fresh contemporary décor and large windows letting in heaps of light. The Platform Lift Company’s brief was to design a platform lift to travel under 1 meter from the entrance area to the ground floor bar & restaurant area. With the Platform Lift in such a prominent area we had to make the Platform Lift blend into a Victorian and contemporary feel not to mention such a tight space. The Platform Lift Company design and surveying team come up with a standard 1 meter Platform Step Lift with a few minor changes making the whole entrance area flow with elegance maintaining the contemporary & Victorian feel making the disabled access blend in. The Platform Lift Company specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of platform lifts within the retail and restaurant environments, making Platform Lifts a pleasure ride in elegance for its disabled users.

The plan of NOTTINGHAM of 1827 shows the three houses standing independently as they do today. In the 1830s they became part of a terrace of three-storey houses, which were eventually demolished in the city redevelopment schemes of the late 1960s. The three original houses, numbers 10,12 and 14, were retained and restored and the site around developed by The Salvation Army to include an elderly persons’ home and a goodwill community centre, thus becoming a living memorial to the life and work of William Booth, Founder and first General of The Salvation Army.

The Platform Lift Company was contacted by the museums architect to help in the design of a disabled platform lift to travel through three floors within the no 12 Nottingtone Place, the problem we had was the terraced house was tight for space and needed The platform Lift companies designers to “shoehorn” the lift into the given tight lift shaft. Not a problem for the lift designers and through the main contractors J. Tomlinson Limited and the Platform Lift Company in house lift design team they came up with a platform lift that fitted like a glove.

The museum is intended to give visitors a general outline of the life of William Booth and the development of The Salvation Army. To achieve this the exhibition has been laid out, as far as possible, in chronological order and it is therefore important that visitors should follow the suggested route through rooms 1-6 covering the three floors.

The Platform Lift Company has recently completed the installation of a platform lift providing access for all visitors and ensuring DDA compliance for a new community centre.

The HOPE Centre is a new community centre in Worcester providing a range of resources for children, families and pensioners. It was essential that the community centre build included the installation of a fully DDA compliant hydraulic platform lift, with functionality to support all possible disabilities including blind and deaf users. The architect’s designs positioned the platform lift in the main foyer area, so the hydraulics for the lift needed to be concealed to avoid detracting from the aesthetics of the foyer, but still be located close enough to the lift to allow effective operation.

Despite heavy snow and poor weather, The Platform Lift Company met with contractors and architects on site in December 2010 to discuss and solve the challenge of housing the control box in a way that was unobtrusive. Using their experience the Platform Lift team were able to find a way to ensure the lift remained a pleasing feature of the new building and did not detract from the architect’s design.

The final installation took place in March 2011, with the free standing hydraulic lift blending seamlessly with the exposed timbers and metal handrails of the community centre foyer to create a welcoming reception for all visitors.

However, the Platform Lift Company had to think laterally – they were not permitted to fix the steplift to the wall or the floor in the vicinity of the entrance, as the building structure was protected by the Listed Buildings Regulations. Instead a custom built steplift was supplied to fit flush to the stair run and was affixed directly to the stairs. The final appearance was enhanced by powder coating the rails on the steplift to the architect’s exact colour specification, creating a low impact installation that complemented the environment.

Disabled staff, visitors and students can now enjoy full access to all areas at Hartpury College, thanks to the installation of a new platform lift.

Hartpury College is a large agricultural college in Gloucestershire teaching a range of land based subjects. In Spring 2011 they commissioned Markey Construction, a large regional building company, to construct a state of the art architect designed IT suite for the college. As preferred suppliers for Markey Construction, Platform Lift were chosen to supply and install a fully functional DDA compliant wood clad lift in the new building, with the wood cladding providing a pleasing aesthetic to the exterior of the lift shaft.

The project timeline was extremely tight, with a full site survey required urgently at short notice on a Friday afternoon prior to the concrete floor being poured the following day. The Platform Lift team were able to be move quickly to respond to the contractor’s requirements – the bespoke electric lift was fast tracked through manufacturing and was installed within six weeks from the initial site survey.

Hartpury College were delighted with the finished result and the contractors benefitted greatly from the pre and post install checks that Platform Lift provide as a standard part of their service, whilst the architect achieved the subtle integration of a compliant platform lift that he required.

It’s been ten years since local entrepreneur Sean O’Sullivan started his enterprise specialising in platform lifts, and the company celebrates its first big milestone with the lion’s share of the market and some glamorous new contract

With the head office based in a beautiful barn conversion in the Hampshire countryside, passers-by would be forgiven for thinking The Platform Lift Company was a small local business, but they couldn’t be more wrong.

When the Disability Discrimination Act came into place in 1995, Sean recognised a niche market for platform lifts and sure enough in 2001 – just months on from installing his first lift at a Pizza Hut in Birmingham – the company became involved with one of the biggest names in the world, Japanese firm ‘ITOUCHU’.

This alliance marked the beginning of the business’ expansion. With a dedicated team offering a high level of expertise, The Platform Lift Company quickly gained a reputation for quality and reliability, which enabled Sean to expand the company’s horizons overseas.

In 2006, his business model was replicated in Australia, Dubai, Belgium, Spain and Eire; designing and installing into Sydney Opera House, Yas Island Formula One race circuit in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World, Hugo Boss, No 1 Hyde Park and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Despite the UK being the pioneer for platform lifts, statistics report that around 80% of the country is currently inaccessible to those with disabilities, which exposes the vast scale of the worldwide market.

Sean says: “We are currently the UK market leader in platform lifts and I think a large part of that is down to the fact that we have our own departments dealing with our clients, from the design stage through to installation and maintenance.

“We place a huge amount of importance upon providing a complete service and, with access to some 300 engineers, can have a maintenance team with any of our clients in under two hours. As many of our accounts are in the retail sector downtime is out of the question, because if a lift isn’t functioning, huge sections of a store are off-limits to those in wheelchairs.”

In ten years, The Platform Lift Company has gone from strength to strength, evolving to cope with the most complicated of projects – including a specialist lift for the London Underground which took three years to design and build in order to comply with stringent demands. Clearly the local company have continued to raise their game; with a high level of expertise and a fantastic reputation, Sean can rest assured that having reached double figures, this is only just the beginning…
